My Assignment to Japan
This is a picture of me at a gold shrine. Last fall (1999), I took a 3-day trip to Kyoto. There were numerous things to see but this was probably the topper; this is the Golden Pavilion. It is covered with gold leaf! We weren't allowed to get within touching distance for obvious reasons. Set in a beautiful park, Kinkakuji is a three-storied pavilion covered in gold leaf, topped with a bronze phoenix on its roof. The original was constructed in the 1390s as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Reportedly, A distrubed student monk destroyed the original by fire in 1950; it was rebuilt in 1955.
