In Spring 1999, Pat Rossi and I went on the four-day
trip to Hiroshima. On the way we stopped at Miyajima
Island, called one of Japan's three most beautiful
spots. We are standing in front of the O-Torii of
Itsukushima Shrine that was first built in the latter
half of the 6th century; Itsukusima Shrine was
remodeled into the present structure in 1168. The
shrine was officially designated a precious asset of
world heritage in 1996.
The day before we visited, a typhoon caused some major structural and tree damage. Anyway, the island has small deer roaming free in the streets - one of which tried to eat Pat's map! |
